It depends.

Sometimes I'm so struck / arrested by an idea, image in my mind or environmental stimulus (eating, TV, looking out the window, a noise) that I sit and bang it out.

Sometimes it's the other way round: when the story's there but the muse is b****y (COFFEE!!!!*Angry*), then I give it coffee and music it loves (Taylor Swift and Tom Petty, Münchner Freiheit and Falco, what it fancies), OR we cook / bake / eat and PENG! Out with it. *BigSmile*
