It is possible. A lot of people love a good pirate story. The phrase was originally a reference to old world maps. On these maps unexplored areas would often contain Latin phrases like 'Hic sunt leones'. In modern English this would translate as 'There are lions here'. In middle English (1150–1470) this was translated to 'Here there be lions'. It was later changed to tigers as the great cat was feared more. |
