Mind maps work really well. There are a few reasonable ones online. When doing an academic essay, I use MS Publisher to mindmap my work, but some free ones include:

Miro (miro.com)
MindMup (mindmup.com)
and Canva
I used to use Canva for covers, but don't like their interface, and finding the mind map stuff is awkward, but this is the one my son swears by.
