It's straight forward, follows some popular but not cliched tropes, and has a very clear protag.

I am assuming, of course, that his wife was a victim of this same serial killer, and he works this out, so it becomes personal, which clouds his judgement... that sort of thing?

But it sounds like a story that could work quite well.
