I always liked Hänsel and Gretel, too, because they're clever... using bread crumbs to find back out of the woods. Didn't save them in the end of malintent "adults", though.
Funny enough, Lisa Cron used that breadcrumb metaphor in her book Wired for Story for showing how you could weave suspense into your writing without giving everything away at once – and not "save it up" for a Big Reveal in the end (because long before you'd have lost the reader who got lost in the "story woods" for lack of info "breadcrumbs".)
