I'd like to think I'd refuse. But experience tells me that much depends on just what exactly is being asked. I think we all make small concessions every day - in those matters that inhabit the grey area around the central core of belief. It's rare for those central areas to be probed. Much more common is the gradual erosion of the grey area, with one compromise leading to another until the centre is weakened and, ultimately, destroyed.
Easy to make grand statements of moral purity. Not so easy to avoid death by a thousand cuts.
