I love your attitude that you'll get better at writing poetry. Though I'm of the belief that it doesn't matter if you are good at it or not (unless you plan to make a living at it). Writing is for you. If others enjoy it, all the better. But if they don't, it's only important that you do.

I'm also about short stories vs. novels. I listen to audiobooks, but if I have to read, I much prefer a novel-length book of short stories than an actual novel. That way, if I put it down for a few weeks, I don't have to worry about remembering what was happening last.
