Could this be an explanation?

Maybe there's two ways of doing it. The "Latin" used is always said to be iffy and anyone's translation more so. If mixed and burned in a mask, it coats the mask. If made separately, it forms a paste. Does magic do that sort of thing?

That still leaves whether a sigil is needed or not.

Can a mask once made and sealed retain some part of a sigil that would allow modification without the book or a separate sigil, if whatever is done properly?

I've always thaought it was made into a paste and applied because that's how I read it done first. WHere is the first description of executing the seventh spell?
