DISCUSSION: Poetic Patterns
by Dave Author IconMail Icon
Poetry weaves an intricate web of aesthetic effects with threads of lyrical language, vibrant imagery and organizational form. As poets, we select a pattern for any particular composition based on the contributions the specific characteristics of that form will make toward enhancing the shades and nuances of meaning.

For example, the traditional Japanese Haiku is known for its vivid imagery presented in compact language. The crisp iambic cadence of the English Sonnet sounds a bit like a military march into the realm of the poet's imagination, and the pattern of repetition in the Malaysian Pantoum creates a series of echoes which magnify the images or thoughts being presented. Each form has a specific group of features which can amplify the theme of a poem significantly.

The following links provide access to a number of popular resources for poetic forms:

Poetry Magnum Opus   ~ An exhaustive collection by Judi Van Gorder, aka Tinker Author IconMail Icon.

Poetry Forms   ~ A treasure trove of old and new forms compiled by Larry Eberhart

The Poets Garret   ~ Traditional forms from many cultures collected by Terry Clitheroe.

Poetry Base/Forms   ~ Traditional forms that can be sorted by criteria.

Shadow Poetry   ~ Includes a collection of newly invented forms.

Mastering the discipline of poetic forms requires patience, dedication, and faith. You can do it if you are willing to take the time and make the effort. In the end, the ultimate result will be well worth the time spent in the tedious process of learning. The more forms you have available in your toolbox, the broader your range of expression will be.

Your assignment: Write a poem about the concept of patterns.

Let the creativity flow from your soul! *Cool*
