Tools of the trade: Onomatopoeia
by Dave Author IconMail Icon
Onomatopoeia is a literary device which employs a word to imitate the sound it represents, such as ringing bells and buzzing bumblebees. This technique adds flavor and depth to what might otherwise be a rather mundane expression.

Edgar Allan Poe used this device very effectively in his poem The Bells: http://www.bartleby.com/102/88.html

More examples of onomatopoeia words can be found in the following link: http://www.ereadingworksheets.com/figurative-language/poetic-devices/onomatopoei...

Your assignment: Compose a poem about some adventure, factual or fictional, using this technique to enrich your expression.

Let the creativity flow from your soul! *Cool*
