(First time to post here at The Poet's Place Cafe) I’m fascinated by the intensity of the poetry of Edgar Allan Poe. Many of his poems have a dark or eerie mood and reflect the subconscious self and human imagination. Often, his poems are relatively short and include rhyme and meter. After rereading several of his poems and information about his life and his thoughts about writing, I was inspired to write the following poem. The Dreamer I stepped behind a veil of sleep unfettered by the mortal coil. At first, pausing – then a leap onto a dark, disquieting soil. As I took the landscape in, the wav’ring hill, a chiseled tree, a form appeared and chilled my skin. I looked again – yes, it was she! Hoping I could disappear, a turn on heels to slip away from a scene cold and austere, she spoke up, her voice icy-gray. “I’ve waited all this time for you, and here you are before my eyes.” Her lips grew tight, her smile askew. I knew to linger was unwise. Rejecting rest, I stood to spy the sleeper on the bed. ‘Twas I. "Always be a poet, even in prose." ~ Charles Baudelaire ~ |
