Lesson Three Discussion Question Please note: This week we have a RESEARCH discussion topic. 1. Google "use of adjectives and adverbs in writing" and see what some experts say about their use. a. Each quote must have a minimum writing insight/advice of three quotations. b. Do not write out simple definitions. c. Find and include concrete advice. d. Include a link to each of your quotations. Here is an example of one done correctly from last week's lesson: "Extremely strong dialect can be hard to follow, erasing all dialect from a piece can rob it of flavor and emotion, which is rather the point of this sort of writing." by webmonkey on http://www.planewalker.com/forum/editting-and-writing-standards The key is, adjectives should be used only when they highlight something the noun can’t highlight. By William Noble http://www.writersdigest.com/writing-articles/by-writing-goal/write-first-chapte... “The road to hell is paved with adverbs.” “The road to purgatory is paved with adjectives.” By Sarah Chauncey https://www.sarahchauncey.com/adjectives-adverbs/ Adverbs convey information about how things happen, as well as when, where and to what extent. https://www.writing-skills.com/how-to-use-adverbs-effectively 2. Research what other writers of creative writing have to say about the usage of adjectives in our writing. “Writing courses teach people to write badly. Only use adjectives and adverbs if you absolutely must." By Tessa Schlesinger 3. Choose three to report to us. Mark Twain believed adjectives and adverbs should be killed. Stephen King finds the overuse of adjectives and adverbs a pet peev. Christine Feehan avoids using adjectives and adverbs as much as possible 4. Which piece of advice was the most surprising to you? Why? None of the advice I’ve read surprises me. I have been reading different books and articles on the craft. They all advise against using -ly adverbs. 5. How will you use this new knowledge to improve your own writing? I will go back through what I’ve written and cut out as many -ly adverbs as possible. ** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only ** ** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only ** |
