I gave both the story, the review, and the reviewers bio a quick glance. I'll give you that the one star seems pretty harsh, but the guy seems new to the site and at least he tried offering some honest critique. (If you want my opinion on the story, send me a PM and I'll look at in more detail) If I were you, I'd let it simmer for a few days, and once I'd gotten past the crappy score I would ask the reviewer to elaborate on his comments, because that could very well turn that review into some very valuable feedback. As it stand right now, it's too unspecific and shallow to really be useful. It's easy to be upset with receiving that kind of review (I've been there too), but if they provide some information on how you could improve the story (or as a writer in general), they're usually way more useful than any all-out-praise five star review. And always keep in mind that opinions differ. J.K. Rowling was rejected 12 times by editors and, like all other writers, her work has received bad reviews. At the same time, many of us can probably mention a successful book we didn't think was written at a publishable level. |
