I completely agree that reading is paramount to becoming a good writer, but not just reading, reading in the right way. When I read purely for entertainment, I don't think much about what I'm reading, I'm just enjoying the story. But to learn the craft of writing good fiction one needs to focus on what the author of a particular piece did well -- and maybe not so well.
I'd say I read less know that I've started writing. I have the same amount of spare time, and I have to both write and read. Though, I try to read every day, and I try to make that reading the focused kind where I split the story in my mind, trying to learn from the published author.
The average amount I read, that's hard to say. A couple of flash fiction stories a week and maybe ten books a year (it's hard to tell with the books though, I don't keep count).
