Writing Your Memoir

I think that goes back to being wordy as well which is definitely a problem that I have always had. If word count is what you want, I am the person for the job. But I have learned since I started freelancing that the number of words isn't nearly as important as the quality of those words.

If you can say one thing in one sentence and get your point across AND allow people to relate, you don't need three more sentences to make it sounds fancy, absolutely tragic or painfully sad.

Like you said, showing, not telling.
