If I was doing this, I'd more closely emulate the bible. This is what Superman and every hero with the initials JC does. Your hero arrives, gets a posse of close friends, and they start changing the world. People who are disenfranchised look to him (ex Black Lives Matters people, Occupy, etc). This upsets the status quo of Big Media, Big Government and Big Business. Big Media might be able to roll with the changes, but when Utopia arrives and people have plenty of food ala Star Trek, money stops mattering and Big Business's profits go down. So big business and the Military Industrial complex conspire to take the Hero out of the picture so they can get back to work. I'd pick these as your antagonists because they are also the enemy of your disenfranchised folk. More so than the Catholic Church, let alone just one denomination of a globally minority religion. If you're going to follow the "died for us" angle, you've got to figure out how him going in voluntarily/getting sold out by Judd will backfire against the bad guys. And that is why you hook in Judd to sell him out for $30. Take a page from the Gospel of Judas, and make this something Elijah plans with Judd because he knows his followers won't give him up, etc. To modern bible-thumpers, the Gospel of Judas will seem a like a plot twist, when it's really just an alternate view of how things went down. There's a lot of other ways to tell it, but bringing in aliens, seems a bit random and doesn't parallel the original story. |
