I noticed no one touched on the subject on what should be kept or thrown out. My philosophy is to KEEP EVERYTHING. You never know when that little tidbit you wrote a day, week, or even a year ago may become a meaningful part of a poetry. Our lives are constantly changing as do our styles of writing, at times.
What I do is I have a file in my poetry folder (on my computer) where I keep all those little tidbits that I've jotted down at restaurants, hotels, or on the go somewhere - anything that I just couldn't make into a poem. And I do the same with my story file if I think that tidbit should be a story. This way, if I find I need it later I can peruse everything I've written in the past to see if I can use it.
I hope this helps you some.
