Yes if you write during the month, you maintain all rights to the story. Normally if it hasn't chanced then you will write using whatever program you normally use. Then you will go in every so often, once a day if you want, and post how many words you are at. At the end of the month you do have to post what you have written so they can verify you are posting the right number.

Hopefully some others will answer this also and correct anything I have told you wrong. The page where you tell them your word count, should not be up until sometime after midnight on the first of November.
