For mechanics, I love the books of Joseph M. Williams, such as Style: Lessons in Clarity and Grace  Open in new Window.. For encouragement and big-picture stuff, I like Anne LaMott's Bird by Bird  Open in new Window..

There's got to be a good book in between somewhere, but I have yet to find it. At the moment, I'm working my way through Jeff Vandermeer's Wonderbook  Open in new Window.. I don't know that it's life-changing, but it's got some nice exercises and great online back-up.
