Science fiction deals with improbable possibilities, fantasy with plausible impossibilities. - Miriam Allen de Ford
Another way I like to think about it is this: fantasy doesn't explain, science fiction does. But I guess not all science fiction gives explanations. I think there is a gut feeling with this sort of thing. If it is magic then it is probably fantasy. If there is technology it is probably sci-fi.
An alien is something that isn't native to that place or planet. So weird creatures in a fantasy land are only alien if they came from another planet. Depending on how you describe their arrival and technology dictates whether it is fantasy or sci-fi, I guess.
