Discuss all things relating to writing and genre. |
I admit that I've not read this entire thread. Eh, sorry about that. However, it appears that the discussion is about arrogance, and the author's need or not to have it. The word "arrogance" has a low connotation, but I think it is very useful for an author. If one does not believe in one's own ability as a writer, one would never share their work. You need to be a bit tough to take criticism and rejection after rejection. You can bet that unarrogant (yes, I made that word up just now) author would never have the bollocks to submit work for publication. Also, he or she would never push the boundaries in subject matter or language; he or she would produce nothing but stagnant old repetitive work that everyone has already read. A degree of arrogance in a writer is not bad, as it breeds a stiff spine. In fact, I think it's even a bit necessary. We cannot be delicate flowers in our chosen art. At least, not if we want to be successful (if publishing is the goal). I need a second cup of coffee. Sorry if this has nothing to do with the subject of this thread.
