"Re: sending one e-mail to a lot of people from my address..." Email should be used for communication; not sending any type of advertising or solicitations so just be sure you're sending the email for the right reasons. "Re: Re: Re: Spam?" As a follow up, Google gives a few results that might help... *Right* http://www.internetsociety.org/doc/combating-spam-policy-technical-and-industry-... *Right* http://spam.abuse.net/overview/whatisspam.shtml Neither of those is completely relevant here, but hopefully it provides a better picture. Certainly, we're not the ones who invented the term spam or what constitutes a spam email. Wink Generally, though, it's any type of bulk and unsolicited email. Group items provide a mail group feature which allows members to "bulk" email -- this is ok because people generally agree to belong to the groups and they can remove themselves from a group that sends too many emails. Emailing a group of people outside of Writing.Com's group mailing function is just bad because there is no "opt-out" removal option. One gauge you can use is a pretty simple: "If I send this email, is there a possibility that the recipients will consider it spam and complain to staff?" If there's even a hint of a "yes" in there, then it's likely spam and shouldn't be sent. For sure, many spam senders have good intentions here on WDC -- but good intentions do not always lead to good results. Still another gauge is "If everyone did what I want to do, would it be ok? Would I be ok receiving dozens of the same type of email I'd like to send? Because if I can do it, so can anyone else..." "Re: email" If you don't know someone, no, you should definitely not send them an advertisement. That's considered SPAM and is grounds for account termination (usually only when enough complaints are sent in about it... but people don't like ads in their email -- and just imagine 100 people on the site thinking they could do this ... that would be a lot of SPAM -- let alone the thousands of people on Writing.Com doing it... it would make email useless to people as it would be just ads). Please, for your own good, don't spam. "Re: Re: email" Unfortunately, I have to clarify that this is not good advice. One should never send an ad to someone they don't know. And, I think there's many people here who will also tell you it's a bad idea to send an ad even to people you DO know. As an example, I've interacted with thousands of people on WdC. If they all took that to mean I'd like their fliers or announcements in my email, frankly, I'd never get anything done, other than delete email. ... And perhaps the line of "know" and "don't know" can be blurred. For example, exchanging a review with someone doesn't exactly mean you know them and they may very well report an advertising "flier" as spam. Wink Don't mean to be a downer, but spam is spam ... and spam is bad. "Re: Do we have a rules page here?" "Unsolicited Bulk eMailing", for any reason, is SPAM. Unless those people asked you to notify them, as part of a big group, when you were going to have a new contest, you should not have sent the email. There are many ways to advertise to members within Writing.Com new items or contests. Email should be considered a means to communicate in private; not as a means to publicize new items, contests or the like. If we allowed members to mail everyone they knew on the site each time they added a new item they wanted people to read or a contest they wanted people to enter, our servers would grind to a halt from overload. Since you note that you emailed me, I did feel your email to me was SPAM and it was promptly deleted. Hopefully you realize this mailing was done in error and it shouldn't be a problem or happen again. SPAM'ing is strictly prohibited on Writing.Com. Our "User Agreement" states this and it can be found linked from the bottom of any page. It's also linked from the "My Account" page. Spam happens. That doesn't make it "allowed." It's certainly not appreciated. It's also not something to recommend as being okay to do. If you do it, you're taking the risk that any person who doesn't appreciate it might report it. From the "Member Agreement" which is linked from the bottom of each page: http://www.writing.com/main/agreement.php 10-E. TERMINATION FOR SPAM SPAM is bulk unsolicited email or public message postings. The act of sending SPAM from, referencing and/or to Writing.Com is STRICTLY PROHIBITED, will not be tolerated and may result in immediate account termination without prior notice or warning. Additionally, Writing.Com reserves the right to charge $100.00 per complaint received about any SPAM; Writing.Com also reserves the right to bill SPAMMER for any and all investigatory, legal and/or other expenses resulting from their act. Hope that helps. ~~Image #6000 Sharing Restricted~~ ~~Image #603504 Sharing Restricted~~ |
