I tend to be flexible and accept the range of poems in this form -- For example, I'm okay with very traditional haiku (no punctuation, etc versus relaxed rules with punctuation, titles, etc). Even the syllable count is flexible, as long as you have rationale - For example, while I personally prefer haiku written in 5-7-5 syllable count lines, I am fine with poems that try to capture the traditional Japanese syllables, which would yield an English language poem more in the range of 3-5-3.
