“Mom, we need to have a long talk. First, you do know I’m not wild about carrots, right? So why do you keep giving them to me for lunch?” Diane asked.

Her mother smiled at her, but didn’t say anything as she went about finishing what she was doing in the kitchen.

“And I would really like to go outside right now. That would be really nice.”

Diane waited for her mother to say something, but she just moved into the living room and began dusting the furniture.

“You aren’t listening to me, are you?”

Diane’s mother finished dusting the table at the end of the sofa and then walked over to her and kissed her on the forehead, but didn’t say anything to her. Diane started to say something else, but her father came into the room and distracted her. She smiled at him as he hugged her and gave her a kiss on each cheek.

“Dad, would you make Mom listen to me. I don’t seem to be getting anywhere on my own here, but could you get me one of those red popsicles out of the freezer first?”

Her dad walked over and kissed Diane’s mom and walked into the kitchen.

“One of the red ones, Dad,” she said.

When he came back into the room, all he had was a bottle of water. Sitting on the sofa, he began to tell them all about his day at the office.

Frustrated, Diane began yelling at her parents. “Hello? I’m talking to you. Won’t you at least listen to me?”

Diane’s father walked over and picked up his daughter. “What’s my little girl cooing and babbling about?”

“Oh, she’s been doing that all morning. I wish somebody would invent something that lets us understand babies.
