I'm also not very comfortable on Nano forums. I find them too cluttered and too slow. So, you're not alone in that.

I think most of the regions have their facebook pages. Mine(India) has one. It's more of a place where some online/offline write-ins are arranged. You get some prompts and encouragement when youare stuck. You can probably join them for distraction/fun/inspiration. LOL. I advise them just because of the local fun a person can have in these groups.

As for the buddy system, they are like Nano forum friends. You can into the buddy list and see their word counts and get inspired. Also, you can send them a Nanomail and talk to them while writing.
