In the "list" view, clicking an icon copies it for you, then you just have to paste it...

And yes, your initial suggestion is a popular one; it's just been a pretty difficult feat for browsers. New browsers have less issues with such things and the new HTML 5 specs make something like this much more possible in the future. But I'm still not messing with it until I'm sure most all browsers will handle it correctly without lots of issues.
