Welcome, Joshua. I think joining Writing.Com was your best, first step. *Smile* IMHO, of course,

Trouble with longer stories, huh? Guess you just have to decide you have a story to tell, whether anyone wants to hear it or not. Sometimes you need to not worry about what others will think; you just need to get it out. Chances are as many folks who don't like it, will like it. After all, each of us has our own likes and dislikes. But you won't improve if you don't write.

You also need to grow a thick skin if you want feedback. Not all will be favorable. But take what you want from their opinions and make it yours. They're just opinions. I don't take all the 'suggestions' made with regard to my writing. But I can usually find one or two decent nuggets to help me out.
