"Maybe he was trying to be a father. He's seeing what he is missing out on and how you have grown. Give him a chance, honey." James sighed. "you could be right. I'll give him a chance." He gave her a tiny smile. "I know it is hard. I'm proud of you." "I guess I should be grateful. He's provided for me and given me everything money could buy that I wanted." James said. "I just wish he wasn't so cold." "People can change," she whispered. James reached for her hand. "I think you've helped it start." "I don't think it's just me," she smiled. James shrugged. "I think it is, Rani." Vince looked uncomfortable. "Are we going soon?" Rana looked up at Vince. "I don't know. I hope so." "I think it's been almost 15 minutes," James said. "And what I could eat I managed to keep down." "Good," Vince said. "I can get the car when we're ready." He looked over. "Some coffee sounds good." Without waiting for an answer he moved away to get some. James squeezed her hand. "I think that went better than it could have gone." "You looked really scared," she whispered. James nodded. "I was, I'm not a little boy anymore, but he still scares me." "You can be a man and still be scared. I am still scared of Andy." James leaned closer to her. "He's never hit me," he whispered. "I don't have a good reason to be afraid of him." "I still think it's okay. I think you are afraid of disappointing him." James nodded. "That's a big piece of it. I know he thinks I won't make anything of myself." He rose and came around the table bringing the chair. "You know me." "But one day he will see that you have," she smiled. "I am always here for you." James kissed her cheek and put his arm around her. "And I'll always be here for you." Behind them Vince groaned. "Where's the remote?" "Oh be quiet," she giggled. "You know it makes you happy." "Hallmark channel," Vince grumbled but grinned. "Sappy show starting in five minutes." James raised an eyebrow. "I've seen you watching them, Vince." Rana giggled. "And isn't it better live?" she teased. "Can I have your autograph?" Vince simpered. James burst out laughing. Rana laughed. "If you really want it," she joked. "Charge him $5 for it," James joked. Rana laughed at that. Vince rolled his eyes. "When we play soccer I'm going to have to beat you for that." "Yeah right, old man," James said. The doctor came in. "How do you feel, Rana?" Rana smiled. "Aside from my head killing me, I feel fine." "Ibuprofen for the pain and ice to help numb it. I think you'll be fine." "And kisses," James said so only Rana could hear. Rana smiled softly at James. "Thank you, doctor." James grinned knowing she'd heard. "Yes, thank you, doctor." She beamed at them both. "When you're done come sign the papers and you can go." Rana blushed. "I'm ready to go home." "Alright, I'll sign the discharge and you can pick them up at the nurse's desk. Try not to get any more bumps for awhile." She ruffled Rana's hair gently. Rana giggled. "I'll do my best." "I'll watch her," James promised. "I won't let him get past me again." The doctor tilted her head. "I believe you. Anyway, I have to go." She gave a small wave before heading out. |
