Rana gasped. "You've done all that?" James smiled at her expression. "I have. I knew somehow you wouldn't mind." He handed her the book. "Go ahead and take a look." Rana took the book and flipped through the drawings."These are amazing..." "What are some of your favorite things?" James asked carefully. Rana thought. "Dancing and the outdoors and Soccer,..." James chuckled. "Soccer? I love soccer." "Really? you too?" "Goalie," James said holding his hands up as if blocking a goal. He smiled brightly. "Some of the best years of my life were spent in a net." "I bet you were good," he said "The always said I was..." James reached for the book. "They can't all be wrong, right? Make yourself comfortable however you want." "I guess not." She climbed up onto her rock and laid down on her tummy, resting her chin in her hands. "Perfect," James said softly. He chuckled. "I should add wings." "Wings? Why?" she asked, James looked up from his tablet. "You'll see," he said mysteriously and grinned mischievously at her, his eyes twinkling merrily. "Um,okay," she said shyly. "I trust you." James chuckled at her hesitation then quickly drew an outline of her and sketched in shading until you could see what the picture was going to be. He looked at her and tilted her head. "Dancing and the outdoors and I bet you run like the wind when you want to." The drawing was an outline of her on the rock but with gossamer wings and a giant leaf behind her, turning her into a fairy. "I can run fast," she admitted. "I knew that somehow. Remind me never to race you." He grinned and went back to his drawing adding in more and more detail before declaring the picture done and showing it to her. Rana grinned and then gasped."That's amazing!" "Do you want to be a fairy princess?" James asked. He couldn't help smiling at her reaction. I wouldn't mind, smiling her first real smile since the death of her father. James turned the book and with a few quick strokes drew a circlet holding an oval stone. "There, much better." "What? Let me see, please, " she whispered. "You can move now if you want," James said even as he scooted closer to her and let her see the picture. Rana moved and sat next to him. "Wow, you made me so pretty," James reddened, but he held back from saying what came to his mind that he only drew her as she was and added wings, a leaf and a circlet with a pretty stone. "It's in black and white, but what color stone and wings would you like?" He cleared his throat. "In the picture...I can paint it or use colored pencils." Rana thought., "A blue stone." "Sounds nice, like a sapphire," James said, his voice a little faraway as he pictured the drawing in color. "Maybe a blue and green for the wings, like a dragonfly's wings?" "Yeah, I'd like that," she replied. "Perfect," James said. "I'll do that once I get home then, that's where the pencils are." A thought crossed his mind but he shook his head at himself. There was no way that she would accept, she barely knew him. "Okay...I'd like to see it when it's done," she said shyly. "Rana, would it be okay to exchange phone numbers?" he asked. "Um, so I can have the lawyer reach you and you can call me if you need me?" "That's a good idea.. Um..do you have a piece of paper?" James tried to fight a laugh and slowly held his book up, snapping it shut with a smirk. Rana raised an eyebrow.. "Well if you don't want it...." James' jaw fell open. "No! No, I want it," he said quickly. He opened the book and flipped to the back before ripping a page out. He handed it to her with the pencil. Rana smiled "I thought so." She wrote her name and number in her beautiful handwriting. James watched her writing. "Were you raised in India?" he asked in a whisper. Rana looked over . "Yes....then a little bit before I started college, dad got transferred to London." "You have beautiful handwriting," James said. He wondered what it would look to see her write his name on the paper. "I bet you miss it." |
