October Novel Prep Challenge

This is a setting with a story thrown in. I wrote the story for two previous assignments, but it hasn't been entered in previous contests, and I added about 700 words of mostly setting since it was reviewed and rated.

Having one eye on the story, I was conscious of delaying the action and slowing the pace. At least, that's my excuse for not adding more smells and tastes; something else would have to go. With more time... but we' all have to get used to getting timed out.
