Daily Flash Fiction Challenge

The argument between Xia and Silas had been vicious even for them. Taz sided with Silas because the pale haired aristocrat, Xia, was out of line. Xia sat on her bottom bunk bed, arms folded, eyes slit in accusation.

"Xia..." Taz began.

"Really, Taz?" she beat her to it, "Will you always be shoved so far up Silas'-"

"Stop!" she demanded, "Silas knows what he's doing, Xia. Leave it alone."

After a speculative look, her head tilted to the side, Xia stood, placing herself inches from Taz. "Am I intimidating? Is that why you don't like me?"

Taz contained the snort that wanted to erupt from the ridiculousness of that statement. Her hand fell on Xia's shoulder and she leaned in close to the girl's ear conspiratorially. She caught the faint scent of jasmine on her skin and an odd shiver went down her back.

"Not on your life." she whispered. Before pulling away, an impulse gripped her. She slid her hand to the back of Xia's neck, pulling her closer. "Who says I don't like you?"

Xia stiffened as Taz leaned back to catch her gaze. Tilting her chin forward, Xia gave the most defiant glare she could muster.

A shuffle in the hallway was the only warning of Milo sticking his head in the door. The two of them seemed wrapped together in an intimate embrace. He shook his shaggy head at them.

“Silas isn’t going to like this,” he commented, leaning against the frame. Xia wriggled free from Taz’s grip, which had slackened considerably, and made a hasty exit without looking at Milo.

Taz stalked over to the intervening slag, grabbing his shirt collar to bring his smirking face down to her level.

“Don’t breathe a word of this to anyone!” she snarled.

“Or what?” he grinned.
