An informal group of writers who enjoy reading books & sharing feedback |
I was curious to read your impressions of the book. Our book club read it shortly after it was released in the USA. At first we rejected it but then decided at the recommendation (more like firm insistence) we began the read. I, like the others, noted that the begiing was tough to get through. Having read many good books with this problem, I slogged through and then could not put it down. At the end I bought book two and put on order book three before we even suggested to continue reading them. The Lord of the Rings movie was released in parts but filmed as a whole. I feel these three books were one story just broken for the readers benefit. How many of us would have picked up a tome of that length? None, I am sure. The story line was in depth, we understood the problems of the country and how Steig felt about them. The detail, while deep in someplaces and sparce in others is the result of a male's perception. We (females) tend to read to "Feel" the story and garner an emotion. Men, for the most part, write the logical side and view the "feel" from a different perspective. Not less, just different. I know one thing for sure, reading the first book and not the rest is the biggest mistake in this instence. The sum is the whole of the books. Each of the reviews above had good points but I read this book from the point that I NEVER read these kind of books. They are not my style or interest. I joined the club to experience something different and boy was this different. In fact, almost all the books we read over a two year period became best sellers and movies AFTER we had read them. None of them were on the best seller list, we didn't want to read what others were reading and eventually our picks became other readers picks. I loved both versions of the the movie. Each had their strong and weak points but I think the craft and story was held and not dimminshed in any way.
