Hi Phoenix I'm back. (That phrase sounds threatening only because movie-makers find it a good hook to reel us in.) What I'm interested in, is how kids like mine manage school/college environment. My fifteen-year-old is intelligent and academic enough to get to college but he gets anxious about everything new and he finds half-a-dozen people seem like a really intimidating crowd. Our local college does a lifeskills course for autistic kids but I don't know whether to suggest this because he's keen to stay at school until 18 then, maybe, go to university. There is an option where he can continue at school until 18 then do the first two years of a universty degree at the local college and then transfer to the university campus for the final year. Another option is distance or online learning but I think he needs the social aspect of learning alongside other people. He doesn't eat during school hours because he can't cope with the crowds in the canteen. Nor will he use a bus without someone to accompany him and pay the driver so he doesn't have to. He won't sit near strangers or near an empty seat in case a stranger sits next to him. (I think he really needs some kind of lifeskills training.before he makes any major decisions about his education.) Well, that's plenty to think about. (I'll just paste most of it into my asperger book.) best wishes, Cathie |
