There was a throbbing pain in the back of my head as I tried to open my eyes. Once I had forced them open I realized I was staring down at my lap, and I lifted my head carefully with a groan. There wasn't much I could see as I looked around me, it was very dark in the room. It was also extremely silent. I tried to move but found that I couldn't. I was sitting in a very uncomfortable chair, my hands tied to the arms of the chair and my feet tied to the legs of it. The ropes were tight and cutting off my circulation, and they hurt when I pulled against them so I just gave up and sat there. Then I could hear voices. They were faint at first but began to grow louder, I suspected someone was coming. There were two voices, and I recognized one that had me immediately breathing erratically. "Well what are you waiting for?" the voice I recognized demanded sharply. "Is everything ready?" "Everything should be working just fine." There was a pause. "Remember, they made me do this. I do not approve of what you are doing here." "I don't need your approval. Now get out of my way!" Yes, there was no denying that that quietly furious and completely compelling voice belonged to no other than Alistair. And just as I thought it, he came into the room with another guy trailing behind him. He smiled cruelly when he saw me, approaching me slowly. I glared balefully. "What is this?" I demanded. "My dear Charlotte," he sighed, brushing my cheek with the back of his long fingers. "Don't be afraid. This will only hurt for a second." |
