I agree with Wenston. I am more prone to outline every detail. What I've learned is to take a step back, and let the story lead you as well. I have major defining points, scenes that can happen, and purposes of each chapter. If I stick with those ideals, I normally surface with a great EDITABLE book. If I am too convicted with something, it will be harder to let it go.
I use a program called Scrivner, and they include a storyboard with notecards. That's how I do it, except I do everything on a timeline, because I never write from beginning to end!
