That is a nice thing to say. I worked many murder cases, but there are two that really stand out. I've been encouraged to write them and when I do I'll let you know so you can read it.
As for writing with authority...the field of law enforcement has become so complicated...a cop has to almost be a lawyer, social worker, kung-fu fighter, and many other things, that a person has to do a lot of research if they want their story to be authentic. Having spent 21 years there I think it would be authentic out of necessity.
I'm not sure the novels and short stories I've read about detectives and crime were boring. I think it's more that I seem to find them boring. However, the non-fiction stories, which would be the two I will eventually write, do hold my interest.
