Well, I was doing some research on creative writing recently on google.com and came across an interesting piece of writing. It has some relevance to what you said. The author of the article too is not in favor of "Write what you know" and says: if we always wrote just what we knew then wouldn't we have to be murderers to write about murders? So, the modified version of the adage should rather be: Write what you think you can convince the reader you know.
I am sure personal experiences help a lot to write about situations, especially the sensory details. But I guess, that definitely is not the ultimate thing.
