There are actually 3 brothers in the story, Cage's Bend. The middle brother dies in a car accident. The older brother, the manic-depressive, blames himself. The younger one stops feeling like he has to compete with the brother that died. He doesn't have do do as well in school, in sports, in family involvement. The younger brother grows up to be successful...but has problems with alcohol and female relationships throughout the story. But that is change for him as a character. He stops competing, he becomes successful, he has problems that are all detailed in the book. He changes and grows, but not always in the right direction. The oldest brother goes from one major manic episode where he gets into trouble, to deep depression where he hears voices and believes "they" are coming for him. He goes through the entire book like that. What made him interesting is the experiences he has. Time in jail, time in mental hospitals, caring relationships with women that eventually goe wrong. But at the end of the book he is the same. One brother is dead but you feel his presence throughout the book, the other brother changes in many ways, and the oldest stays the same, but lives a crazy life. Three characters in the same book, all with a different role, but connected to each other. It was very interesting. Bikerider |
