Well, my friends, such strange teachings come from the Jews. A father who forces His son into the desert to be tested. As a mother, I would take great exception to my son being forced into a place where there is no food or water. Anything could happen to him there, snakes, spiders, and who knows what else is out there to torment Him, not just this fallen one. In my country, boys are often required to show their worth and valor with tests of sport and strength but we do not require them to do so without food. To think of fasting, not eating on purpose is also unfamiliar to me. Only those of the lowest classes do not eat. Having food and wine, making merry and enjoying these things is a sign of a person's standing in our culture. To deliberately abstain from food would make one seem a lunatic, especially since our gods do not require it.

All this talk of food is making me hungry, I can't imagine 40 days without food and then withstanding a test.

These stories of testings and blessings are not unlike some of our stories of the gods but in our stories, they usually end tragically, not with victory or blessings from the gods. I do believe that if the one God of the Jews could show me that He loved me, I would be much more willing to sacrifice and be tested. Our gods test us and try us for their own pleasure and sport it seems.

Yet, I like the idea of one God who is in control of everything and loves me. Believing that would make all the difference. If I could stop this growling in my stomach, perhaps I could think more clearly on these things. Is there anything to fill this hunger in my belly other than wine?
