Re: Day 7
[Amos eases toward the small fire as it glows in the darkness. He stands and listens to his host, this strange guide who has extended much kindness to the group, as he orates the woes of his people. Jeremy and the one who claims to know much of Pilate's household offer their interpretation of the recent events at the river. The man called Jeremy has become like a friend to Amos during their travels this week, but Amos does not share Jeremy's passion for this prophet and the tall man he baptized. The Gentile sitting there seems bitter toward both the Jewish people and his own Roman heritage. Jeremy motions for Amos to join them]

Hail Jeremy. Hail Priest. And you, the Roman, I do wish you would offer up a name of some sort so you may be properly addressed. I see I am among a diverse representation of our group with differing views of yesterday's events. It is good to rest and reflect on what we have seen. I for one, put no reliance in the gods of my Greek heritage, nor in the Roman deities of this land, except perhaps Bacchus, their god of wine.

Pass me that wine jar, will you, Priest? I am thirsty. Seems as though I am always thirsty. Truth is, the wine eases the constant pain in my back. [Amos accepts the earthen jug and takes a long sip] Ahhh...where was I...oh yeah...the gods. There is only this life, here and now, which we can drudge through, complaining of every ill wind that comes our way; or we can accept our own designed fate and choose to learn from our disappointments and offer kindness and amusement to those around us. I lean toward the latter, for why not enjoy the journey while it lasts. Death is the end. There is no underworld such as sheol, hadis, or inferi--only the tomb and darkness. Yet, Jeremy here is convinced the baptist's words are true. He speaks of repentance and redemption--redemption for what? I don't understand.
