You spoke harsh words about Rome, friend. I suppose that some of those words were justified, but well. . .let me put it to you this way: When I was young, I believed that Rome was the greatest country on Earth. Now, I believe that it is the worst country on Earth with only one exception. But that one exception is every other country on Earth. I mean consider the mess that this world was in before the Romans conquered. Rome is still a proud place. And I think I understand something else that I haven't thought of before. I said that no Roman could ever worship the Jewish god, and I think I've figured out the reason. You see, as I understand Jehovah, he requires a complete submission from the Jews. Well, a Roman does not submit completely to anyone. We may partially submit to the gods, because t will bring good fortune. We may partially submit to Caesar because we value our necks, but that is not the same as what Jehovah seems to be asking of his people. I, for one could never submit to Jehovah, and I don't think I could respect anyone who did. Of course, that brings up the man we saw today. He claims to be the "son of God" and yet he seemed very submissive to John the Baptist. What an odd person! Not the sort that I would respect. Of course, respect is not the same thing as love. I mention that because I'm beginning to think that I might love many people who have submitted to Jehovah. Oh well. . . |
