As the psalm says, "The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way." [Psalm 25:9]

The answer to our questions is here. If we are meek, God will guide us the correct way. To ensure that we do not follow a false prophet or a false teacher (remember that John called those of the Pharisees and Sadducees who came to him vipers and serpents), we must be meek and obedient to our God, and he will lead us and teach us which way to go.
