You really think the hippies changed the world? I don't think they changed a thing. Most of them became a part of the establishment in time anyway. What you are suggesting was tried by Communist Russia and it failed. I can't prove this, but I have a feeling that man has an actual need for a spiritual "crutch". That it is not in the mind but within the make-up of the humanity (genetic) I once read that all people no matter how primitive, always gravitate to a belief in a Supreme Being. If this is the case I don't think a higher consciousness is possible. It would be merely a superficial change. (Once again, not that I have any real idea:)
