The only help I can give you is to tell you more about the old TV show. Maybe, that will help you find it.

This show was on for one season about twenty or so years ago, I believe. The aliens came to Earth on the run, "bad" aliens were after them. They crashed on Earth and we gave them refuge. They soon assimilated into our culture and seem to have no trouble learning English. They looked much like us, except they were hairless, had irregular shaped blotches on there skin, and their heads may have been a little larger on top. The central alien character joined a local police department and worked as a detective along side human co-workers.

I think their third gender came up in only one episode. There were far fewer of them than the males and females. They provided their services to couples of there kind through there church. However, in this episode, this one was working freelance. That was against the laws of their culture. What this third gender seem to do, is instead of having semen containing sperm, it had the effect of opening the female's cervix and causing her to ovulate.

Again, I believe the name of the show was "Alien Nation." I hope this is helpful.
