My knowledge is mostly in 20th Century and current firearms. I do have some limited knowledge as far as some older weapons go, and also have numerous reference books that go much farther back. As far as future weapons go, I do stay up to date on current cutting-edge weapons development and research, so I guess you could say I'm well versed in "near-future" weapons. Anything farther out like particle beams, rail guns, etc... is typically going to require someone more well versed in in particle physics and the like than I am, though general weapons principles and tactics should similar to today, and at least recognizable. I've read some well thought out military sci-fi that used radically different tactics than we would be used to by virtue of the types of weapons they were using and the enemy they were fighting, which necessitated a return to classical Napoleonic tactics and strategies.
