We stared at the scenes of destruction on the TV screen unable to believe it was happening again. Explosions, fire, and death in the rubble of public buildings in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Even more shocking were reports of simultaneous explosions all over the world. London, Paris, Moscow, Beijing, Cairo, Tel Aviv, Riyadh, Tehran, none were spared. Blame was thrown around the globe even faster than the fires could spread. Muslim fanatics blamed the Jews, Jewish fanatics blamed the Muslims, and Christian fanatics blamed them both. White racists blamed blacks, black racists blamed whites, communist and capitalist pointed fingers at each other, and the victims bled and died no matter who was to blame. The world cried for answers, but investigations of the explosions only resulted in more questions. No bombs were found at any of the sites and experts could not determine the cause of even one of the explosions. All known terrorist organizations actually denied any involvement. We grew angrier and more frustrated as time went on, wanting the name of an enemy to hate. The few rational voices were shouted down and we came to see everyone as a threat, even our friends and families. We fought among ourselves until only a few isolated individuals remained, hiding in fear of our own species. As one civilization after another died, the alien race who caused the initial explosions congratulated themselves on killing us off without losing even one of their own lives. They didn't have to beat us; we beat ourselves. Arakun ** Image ID #1319944 Unavailable ** |
