And yet, it's very easy for beginning writers to overdo similes and metaphors in their work. They can become a crutch, when all that's needed is a simple description.

In a beginning writer's toolkit, there are bad metaphors, bad similes, bad descriptions, bad punctuation, bad grammar, in short, no one aspect of writing is immune to their inexperienced first attempts. Bad metaphors and similes are especially noticeable. Consistently bland sentences are equally odious. Common sense, and the ability to see the forest for the trees is important. With practice and experience, the metaphors and similes, and the rich descriptions that incorporate them, can be made to work for the writer rather than against.
