You want to be prepared when an idea hits you. The hardest for me is when I'm driving. One of my novels began as an idea that struck me while I was riding my exercise bike. BAM! By the time I was done with my ride, I had the title and the names of the six main characters (and the basic story line of course). I went out and spent an hour or two painting fencing for my horse. By the time I came in, I pretty much vomited (gross, huh, but it is a pretty accurate description of what happened) the first 3 chapters onto the page. That was the genesis of
I find it is good to be prepared wherever I go. Get in the habit of carrying a little notebook with you so you can jot down ideas as they come up. Don't trust your memory, because life gets in the way. I even keep a notebook and flashlight near my bed.
