Hope you don't mind a little question

Hi! I was looking for a way to ask team India a question, but I found this forum instead, so here goes:

I have a character I want to name Mala. She was born in America, but both her parents are recent immigrants from India (university professors). I know a mala is a string of Hindu prayer beads, but would it be reasonable as a girl's name? If not, could it be short for something?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me on this.
