Hmm, I don't know about that, Andante, that smacks on empathy, which is an ability I've reserved for a yet-unknown creature. I'd figure it to be more like an enhancing of their hunger sense ... er, like knowing you've just eaten and then walking in front of a restaurant or in the food section of a mall or outdoor bazaar. Like a dog's sense of smell, a vampire would always be cognizant of the people (and/or animals) within their range, but being in the Borderlands could increase that range or make people seem jucier (?) or more tantalizing/harder to resist? Something along those lines.
I don't want to go down the path of Dracula, where vampires can mesmerize/control their prey. A vampire should be able to determine, from an increase in sweating, heart-rate, breathing patterns, etc, the mental status of those around them -- rather than being mildly empathic -- like Sherlock Holmes rather than Deanna Troi, for example.
